INTERHOUSE BASKETBALL 2016

On the 21st of September 2016, it was clear that Iranian dragons are everywhere within the MPH- supporting their fellow housemates with obvious enthusiasm. It was an important day for Irinians, whether they’re one of the basketball players or not; if Irinah’s Seniors Basketball team wins against Alia with a score gap that is bigger than the score gap Jawahir won against Alia… the firs Not to mention, Irinah’s Juniors Basketball team were also looking to dominate during the Interhouse Basketball Competition. 

During the Seniors match, it was very clear that Irinians dominated from the very beginning. With the first score going to Irinah (shot by Hazierah Housna), the atmosphere was intense and optimistic. By half-time, at 8-0, the Irinians were definitely eyeing for the trophy. However, after the break, Alia’s seniors did fight back and gained some momentum with 4 points going to their house. Despite this comeback by Alia, Irinah persevered. With amazing points shot by Carol, Jo Eann and Housna, Irinah was unstoppable.

In the end? Irinah’s senior basketball team won by 10-4 and secured 1st place. What a team! 

For the Juniors team, Irinah won 3rd place. Although we didn’t win 1st or 2nd place, the effort being put into the Juniors game was amazing. None of the players quit and that’s the most important value a player can have! Not to mention, they’re all definitely worthy of the applause. 

To conclude, a massive congratulations for the Seniors team and a huge applause for the Juniors team. We all experience wins and losses, the most important thing, though cheesy as it may be, is to learn from them, to keep improving. Through rigorous and continuous practice, I have the outmost confidence you can overcome all the hardships you may face!

House Singing 2016!

As the first two weeks of term progressed, house singing became the two words which, when combined, brought ambivalent feelings to many. As was the norm, hours-long practice sessions wormed their way into our everyday schedules, and the common room became an exceedingly familiar place to all as we gathered there to sing ourselves hoarse. All this was but for one goal, a goal towards which returning students especially showed particular favor: reclaiming our the trophy.

This fortnight was not without its ups and downs. It takes much tenacity and perseverance to coordinate such a large group, with everyone showing varying degrees of enthusiasm. Inevitably, tensions sprang up and smiles grew worn. Halfway through, however, came the day when our wonderful, wonderful upper sixes sat us down and reconciled our differences in a moment that touched our hearts – even though they had done no wrong, they promised to try to make house singing a more enjoyable experience for all. And with that came the acknowledgement that for this to be an enjoyable experience at all, each and every one of us had to play our part in making it one.

And we did.

The day of the grand event itself was a flurry of activity – after school, everyone went straight to preparing, with long queues awaiting our in-house makeup artists and hairdressers. Then came our time to shine.

The six minutes onstage practically breezed past. Every move we had to perform was drilled firmly into our heads, from Dog Days are Over to Wings to Can’t Hold Us – and we gave it our all. For those few minutes, facing only the audience and their expectant stares, we couldn’t tell how well we were doing, couldn’t hear how loud we were or see how synchronised our dance was. All we could do was believe in the many, many practice sessions before this, because in the end those scant six minutes onstage were just a small part of house singing. What really mattered were the hours we spent together as a house, singing together, learning to dance, trying to harmonise, working on props to 2 am – and the laughter, tears and close friendships that this fortnight had brought us.

During the performance came our signature special effect: the powder. Maybe a little too much powder this time, but the cheers from the audience were worth it. After that, in an unexpected turn of events, we came together once again as a house to scrub the stage clean with tissues, jackets, and even the props – now that’s house spirit!

We are proud to accept second place this year, and after coming third the previous year, pressure hopes will be on Irinah to clinch a win the next time. House singing is special because it involves the entire house – professional singer or tone-deaf, we’re in this together. Whatever the result, we’re all winners and that won’t change! Now that the dog days are over, it’s time to spread our wings, and nothing can hold us down.
